Celebrity builder and The Block host Scott Cam will take home more than $300,000 to spruik trades careers to young people, but the Opposition says hiring ambassadors makes no sense at all if TAFE budgets are being cut.

Minister for Skills Michaelia Cash said Mr Cam will be involved in a range of activities over the next 15 months, including high-profile events.

"As Ambassador, Scott Cam will promote careers and the VET system and help direct people to the right career advice at the right time," she said."This builds on the work that Scott has done as an Australian Apprenticeships ambassador under both Labor and Coalition governments." Shadow Minister for Education Tanya Plibersek said hiring ambassadors to promote skills"makes no sense at all" while claiming the Government has cut millions from TAFE and training in one year."If we had a truly excellent TAFE and training system properly supported by our government, they wouldn't need commissioners and ambassadors and a whole range of taxpayer-funded advertising.

In announcing Mr Cam's appointment earlier this year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he wanted more Australians to"become plumbers, electricians and bakers than lawyers and consultants". "Scott Cam is proof that undertaking a trade can be a very valuable, rewarding and successful career choice, and there are plenty more who can tell a similar story to Scott," he said.
