English Premier League club Ipswich Town FC has released a statement after its captain refused to wear a rainbow armband over the weekend.
Ipswich Town 's Sam Morsy the only player to refuse to wear rainbow armband during recent round due to religious beliefs
Morsy, 33, is a practising Muslim, and led out his side for their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday local time with a regular Premier League captain's armband. Following Morsy's decision, Ipswich released a statement supporting the league's initiative, while also sticking up for its captain's decision.
“At the same time, we respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband due to his religious beliefs. We will continue to grow an environment where all are valued and respected, both on and off the pitch.” Ipswich also made a"joint pledge of solidarity and inclusivity" alongside Nottingham Forest before their clash on Saturday, while members of both the men's and women's teams at the club attended the ITFC Foundation's weekly LGBTQ+ Football session.
