Rebel Senator Fatima Payman has announced she will officially leave Labor, bringing to an end speculation about her future after her exile from the party's caucus.

“I have informed the prime minister that effective immediately I will sit on the crossbench to represent Western Australia,” Ms Payman said. “I stand before you not just as a Senator but as a member of the august Australian Labor Party, an institution shaped by the hands of everyday Australians over a century ago,” Ms Payman said.
