Rebel Wilson's weight loss speech at the BAFTAs shows how much pressure women are constantly under to shrink themselves.
saying: “When you’re a comedian, you use things about your physicality to your advantage, and I used being a plus-size girl to my advantage in many comedy movies. Some people have said to me, “Now that you lost weight, are you scared you won’t be funny anymore?” I like to make a joke about it myself first because it is different.”
But maybe Rebel bringing up her weight loss so early on in the evening was a deliberate way of reminding us all that weight iscentral to the conversation, especially in the film industry, even when it isn't meant to be. There's no getting away from it, even when the focus should be on the art of film and the craft of acting, it's"Everybody is asking me, ‘why did you lose weight’.
Whatever Rebel's reason, it clear that women in Hollywood – and beyond – still feel the need to justify their weight as if intrinsically linked to their very existence in a space, as well as the fact that the pressure to lose weight is often overwhelming.
