Standing in the midst of a flattened, burnt out street in Altadena, Los Angeles there is an orange tree. Somehow, it survived. Most people wouldn’t even notice it, they’d look straight past it overwhelmed by the utter destruction. But for Kathy McFarland, it marks where her home once stood. She has fond memories of handing out oranges to the children in her street while she would chat with their parents about the goings on in their lives.
The Los Angeles Mayor and California’s Governor have made executive orders to strip back red tape hoping to make it easier and faster to rebuild. But the prospect of even starting the process is daunting. Authorities are still searching for missing people in the levelled homes. More than 80,000 are still under evacuation orders, many don’t know what condition their house is in or if it’s even still standing.
