Recalling a former grocer's shop in St Mary's Road, Watford, on the corner with Merton Road.
This Watford business has long since disappeared but a clue to its exact location lies in a small detail on the outside of the building.has again joined forces with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at this shop.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This grocer’s shop clearly shows the business name, J. Bone. I usually find the photo's location is easy to track down using street directories but sometimes a double check is needed.“A 1912 directory records a Joseph Bone, greengrocer, at 1a St Mary's Road but the adult in the scene is female.
