But it still needs 20 more feet to break a record.
Annual snowfall totals at the Sierra Snow Lab are measured from Oct. 1 to Sept. 31, so any snow that falls in October, November or December is added to the following year’s total. It’s important to note that snowfall to date is not the same as snowpack, which measures the snow depth.
While the current snowfall to date means the Tahoe region could be on track to set a new single-season snowfall record, it’s still nearly 20 feet short of the current record. That record was set in 1938, when 68.24 feet of snow fell on Donner Summit. However, the Sierra Snow Lab usually points to the 1951-52 season as the record — which brought 67.65 feet of snowfall to Donner Summit — as earlier years were measured in a different location.
“Prior to 1946, the Union Pacific/Sierra Pacific railroad at Donner Summit was making measurements of the snow,” says Schwartz. “We use the data prior to 1946 to examine overall trends, but it isn't directly comparable to the Snow Lab's data because the site and methods were different for the railroad.”
