Amid the violence in Alice Springs that's contributed to two curfews there have been conversations around the role of 'payback'. But some Indigenous leaders say payback has nothing to do with the recent fighting.

Some Indigenous leaders say recent violence in Alice Springs is not the result of cultural "payback".

In recent months, Alice Springs has been rocked by violent clashes playing out on the streets of the outback town. However, many Indigenous leaders are concerned these clashes are being incorrectly blamed on cultural "payback". It sees impacted parties meet after an incident and negotiate a way to restore balance, preventing revenge attacks and further escalation of conflict.

"It's got to be measurable, it's got to be witnessed by other people, and it's got to be fair," she said. "If people see something that involves Aboriginal people and involves violence, they may mistakenly state that this is 'payback', this is Aboriginal law," she said.Ms Spiers said all cultural law was underpinned by the same basic precepts, including rich communication and problem-solving practices, a reiteration of values, and reminding people of who they are to each other and to country.
