The 19-year-old set Australia’s first world record since 2016 as she torched the 100m backstroke field, while Emily Seebohm made her fourth Olympic Games.

Kaylee McKeown had already arrived. Now she is shaking the swimming world on the cusp of the Tokyo Games, with the Queensland teenager setting a new 100m backstroke world record on a deeply emotional night at the Olympic trials in Adelaide.

This chase was on the cards all year after a series of eye-catching times and she held nothing back. Chasing Smith’s 57.57s, McKeown was out in 28.10s and stormed home to touch the wall in 57.45s, shaving 0.12s off the previous mark. Her coach Chris Mooney knew something was on the horizon. It had been brewing like a storm for months and before McKeown started her warm-ups, he told her he believed her time had arrived.“He did say something to me before warm up, he said he believed in me. We knew it was go time. He knew something special was about to happen,” McKeown said.
