The extreme heatwave sweeping regional Victoria is raising concerns for the welfare of people experiencing homelessness.
Rough sleeper Leon Hill is one of many people feeling the heat in regional Victoria this week.Walpeup, a small regional Victorian town, recorded the world's hottest temperature on Monday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. A local housing support organisation has raised concerns about the stifling heat's impact on people experiencing homelessness. The organisation says it wants to work with the local council to provide more 'cool, safe places' for the region's most vulnerable.
As Mildura's morning temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius earlier this week, rough sleeper Leon Hill sat in a park going about his day as usual. The Bureau of Meteorology declared that the nearby regional Victorian town of Walpeup, an hour south, was the hottest place on earth for Monday, recording a staggering 47.1 degrees.'We're in Australia mate, it gets hot,' he said. The Red Cliffs man lost his job at an almond orchard around 12 months ago.Mr Hill forms part of a growing population of rough sleepers, particularly in regional areas where rental vacancy rates are at record lows.According to a report by the Council to Homeless Persons, the Mildura local government area experienced a 180 per cent increase in people living in boarding houses and a 50 per cent increase in rough sleepers in the five years from 2016 to 2023. The problem is even worse in other parts of regional Victoria, including in South Barwon where homelessness cases increased by 465 per cent over the same period. The growing figure is a major concern for Charmaine Calis, the acting chief executive of the housing support non-profit Mallee Accommodation and Support Program. She said it was a busy time of year as the organisation supported more people doing it tough in the elements. 'We see a lot of clients that have got underlying health issues and that really makes them vulnerable to other health-related issues because of the heat, sunburn, dehydration, those kinds of things,' she sai
