Record number of women in the 47th Parliament, as female voters shun Liberals | LisaVisentin katinacurtis

A record number of women will take their seats in the House of Representatives when the 47th Parliament sits for the first time in July, but representation in the Liberal Party has gone backwards as it grapples with how to regain the faith of female voters.

Her victory would take Labor to 77 seats, one more than the bare majority it needs to govern in its own right. The election result has prompted a renewed round of soul-searching within the Liberal Party over how to better connect with women, as female voters steered clear of the party in droves and five Liberal men were ousted by “teal” independents who campaigned heavily on gender equality.

Pressed on why the Liberal Party had failed to resonate with many female voters, Ley said that women “didn’t hear much of what we were saying”. The Senate tipped over half female representation during the last term of parliament, but has boosted its ranks further. It will have 57 per cent women once the new senators take their seats in July.Labor has had quotas for female representation in winnable seats since the mid-1990s with the level ratcheted up over time, while the Liberal Party has had a long-held resistance to quotas.
