The Arizona Diamondbacks are back home to start a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox, who are visiting Phoenix for the first time since 2019. The series opener is Friday at 6:40 p.m. and can be seen on Bally Sports Arizona. Return here for news, updates and more. The Diamondbacks have fallen behind the Red Sox, 3-0, early Friday night. After a mostly clean first inning, rookie starter Brandon Pfaadt struggled in the second.
“We know that he can impact games when he’s playing to the level that we feel like he’s ready to play at,” Lovullo said. “He hit third for us for most of the year last year, so we know he can impact baseball games on both sides of the ball.” McCarthy hit just .143 in his first 22 games before being sent down. He hit .333/.419/.533 in 105 plate appearances in Triple-A and had been particularly productive over the past couple of weeks, with 17 hits in his final 37 at-bats with two doubles and two homers.
“Nobody comes here is perfect for the first 50, 70, 100 at-bats,” Lovullo said. “And I tried to get ahead of him in my explanation to that. These are growing pains that you usually get some time to work through when you're in the big leagues. We just are afforded the opportunity to call up a player like Jake McCarthy in this situation.”
