Thousands of subreddits have gone dark in protest of the platform's new API pricing.

, a number of developers for third-party apps popularly used by Redditors to browse the platform revealed that the company’s new pricing system was far too expensive for them to go on.

However, many developers claim the new prices are way too high to be sustainable. For example, one of the most popular apps, Apollo — as reported on— would allegedly have to pay roughly $1.6 million a month to maintain its app, something which is forcing it to end things by June 30th. Many of you may be wondering at this point why users don’t simply use the Reddit app instead: As explained by, the website can attribute much of its popularity to third party apps because — in the opinion of many Redditors — the actual Reddit app doesn’t quite make for a good user experience and is far too plagued by ads.
