Nitish Kumar Reddy's unbeaten knock continues to frustrate Australia as rain looms over the Melbourne test. India surpasses the follow-on target, while Australia seeks quick wickets to improve their over-rate.

Reddy has gone to 66 not out after straight driving Boland for four to end the 89th over. The skies continue to threaten here in Melbourne although I think Reddy still looks the biggest threat to Australia ’s chances in this match. On the BOM radar, the rain clouds are fast approaching the city so we could have some moisture appearing from around 3pm AEDT onwards. The Melbourne rain radar from December 28 2024.The new ball is six overs old. Perfectly aged for the Victorian speedster.

Reddy is having none of this “Scotty B at the G” nonsense, he drove him through the offside with the first ball.Any talk of the follow on is now gone as India has passed the follow on number. The next ball Cummins hit Reddy on the pads but it looked to be sliding down leg side. It was given no out and Australia left it.Credit:Cummins has the ball moving around but Reddy has held his own against the Aussie skipper playing a lofted drive that last over while also nicking one low into the slips.

Everyone around the batter looks surprised and stunned. It was completely unexpected. For what it’s worth, I’ve never seen anything like that before. The Seven commentators have a similar sentiment. No hesitation from the Australians. Straight to a new cherry as they chase the remaining wickets.Cummins did his best to take down an ailing Reddy after taking a painful blow to his armpit the previous over.

Reddy had some treatment and kept batting but Cummins beat him with one delivery that powered past the bat.India are 7-256 with Reddy on 42 and Washington on 15 after 77 overs.Cummins is bowling to begin the second session of play and the MCG has some lights on as cloud cover has made things a bit dim.

The BOM radar shows some rain clouds are moving towards the city so we could see some rain this arvo but the BOM currently says there is an 80 per cent chance of rain and around 0-6 mm predicted.Credit:So we could have an interruption or two this arvo or, as this is Melbourne, it could completely avoid us and we get hail, blazing sun and a tornado instead.Just to make things worse for India, a rising ball from Cummins has hit Reddy under the armpit and he’s asked for the physio to come out.
