Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham reveals he wants FA Cup semi finals and England matches to stop being played at Wembley and be held around the country
Andy Burnham hopes a refurbished Old Trafford can take FA Cup semi-finals away from Webley and even host England fixtures again.Burnham, the Mayor Of Greater Manchester, is among the names on that task force along with chair of the organising committee for the 2012 London
As well as giving United a state-of-the-art home for what they hope will be an exciting new era, Burnham says that he hopes the stadium can be used for the greater good of English football and put a stop to the concentration of big games in London. Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT's Gameday Exclusive, Burnham said: “I do think we should have an FA Cup semi-final, for instance, played around the country again.
“That my was upbringing. I’ve never liked the idea of semi-finals at Wembley – why shouldn’t they be here?“We’re too London-centric in this country, aren’t we? I personally would like to see England playing around the country as well as it builds more affinity with the national team. “Obviously those are debates for another day and I don’t think it impacts if you go ahead with this or not, but I would like to have a conversation with“When Wembley was being rebuilt it was good when the FA Cup was in Cardiff and it was good when England played around the country.
