At her first court date, Williams admitted to crashing a council car while more than three times the blood-alcohol limit.

The Redland City Council mayor has admitted to drinking four glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel and crashing her Lexus station wagon into trees last month.

Karen Williams said outside court she planned to continue as mayor once she returns from her personal unpaid leave. Her blood-alcohol concentration on the night in question was 0.177 - more than three times the legal limit - when she crashed the council-owned vehicle. The Lexus crossed the four lanes on Wellington Street but continued straight instead of turning and it crashed through metal fencing and went over a small ditch, before coming to a rest in trees and shrubbery.Lawyer Calvin Gnech, representing Williams, said his client struggled to explain her decision to drive.

“In my submission, it is yet another example of a person of otherwise excellent character coming before the courts, and they’re not immune to the stresses of life, and they have gone off poor decision-making.”Magistrate Deborah Vasta noted the heavy publicity Williams’ case had attracted since the crash and the expletive-laden text messages she had received on her mobile phone from random community members.
