Star urged regulators to recognise its management bloodletting and operational reforms as part of a last-ditch effort to hold on to its casino licence.

The Star Entertainment Group has begged a regulatory inquiry to recognise its management bloodletting and operational reforms as part of a last-ditch effort to hold on to its Sydney casino licence, as another inquiry examines its casinos in Queensland.

Lawyers for the gaming giant conceded it was open for the NSW review to conclude Star was unsuitable for the licence when its investigation started in December. However, in closing submissions lead barrister Kate Richardson, SC, argued the company had since eliminated its deficiencies. Star barrister Kate Richardson argued the “failures identified by the review no longer pose a risk of non-compliance”.“A number of the individuals who were responsible for, or failed to stop the conduct addressed by this review, held executive roles at TSEG [The Star Entertainment Group]. These individuals have all since resigned,” Ms Richardson said on Tuesday.

“The Star, respectfully, submits that the review should conclude that it is presently suitable to hold the casino licence.” Counsel assisting the inquiry, Naomi Sharp, SC, earlier this month urged the inquiry to find Star was unfit to hold the casino licence for its waterfront Pyrmont facility.Ms Sharp claimed the company broke both gambling and criminal laws in NSW by setting up its controversial China UnionPay scheme, which disguised funds that high rollers used to gamble as hotel expenses and circumvented regulations, and then allegedly lied to its bank NAB about the practice.
