A pilot program for community-sponsored refugee arrivals, which is helping address skilled labour shortages around the country, is gaining traction.
A trained chef and baker, Mr Mahmoud has limited English and speaks tothrough a friend, acting as an informal translator. A small group of local volunteers, working as part of the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot has helped change his life.
When it was established, the Refugee Council described CRISP as the model Australian communities had been seeking for more than a decade. “I want everyone to come here and work and live a beautiful life, and I hope I can help with that in the future,” he said. “When we match the group with that refugee individual or family, the introduction is made before the people arrive in Australia,” Ms Button said.
