Settling into a new country is a daunting prospect. But a study over 10-years has found there are a variety of positive outcomes that refugees can experience in their first decade of living in Australia . Still, many face challenges with renewed calls for better policies to assist those who are struggling.

The 23-year-old Tamil woman, who fled to Australia as a refugee in 2013, after facing persecution in Sri Lanka, expressed her feelings of culture shock and the challenges she faced upon arrival. Despite these challenges, she is grateful for her safety and the opportunities Australia has provided. The Building a New Life in Australia report documented the settlement outcomes for nearly 2,400 humanitarian migrants, showing increased workforce participation rates from around 20% in 2013 to more than 50% in 2023, with more than a third completing some form of education or job training and about three-quarters feeling part of the Australian community
