Regional Express Airlines says it will push ahead with plans to launch jet services between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as a direct competitor to Qantas and Virgin Australia | pwhatch
Rex - which services about 60 regional destinations with a fleet of 60 ageing Saab 340 turbo propeller aircraft - said it would use the cash to establish an initial fleet of five to 10 jet aircraft based in either Sydney or Melbourne to service the lucrative "golden triangle" between Australia’s three largest cities from March 1 next year.
Mr Sharp said Rex's flights would be a "hybrid model" with affordable fares that also include baggage, meals, pre-assigned seating and members-only lounges. Mr Findlay said the global aviation crisis brought on by COVID-19 would mean there could be a glut of Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s aircraft Rex could buy cheaply.
Rex also said on Monday it was in talks with Franco-Italian plane maker Avions De Transport Regional about replacing its Saab fleet with new, larger and more efficient ATR42 and ATR72 turbo propeller aircraft. ATR will also work on Rex's plans to sell and lease back some of its Saabs.
