Communities cry out for emergency solutions to a growing homelessness crisis with some residents warning the government that rough sleepers are at risk of dying before homes are built.
Empty buildings used as makeshift refuges by squatters are being locked up or demolished, forcing people back onto the streets.
Bunbury councillor Michelle Steck wants the state government's help to rehome those who have been squatting at the boat club."The reality is that people are living in unsatisfactory accommodation … but there's simply nowhere for them to go," she said.Councillor Steck said there was plenty of empty land in Bunbury where kit homes could be set up to house homeless people.Jeremy Wood said it was not the first time the scenario facing Mr Denison had played out in Bunbury.
The department was not able to clarify why it was unable to be refurbished but said the site was being retained for future development. "It's not so much that no-one is voicing the problems or issues that we're facing; it's more being heard," the Centacare team leader said.Ms Lechleitner said local service providers agreed the city needed a night shelter.
