For the first time since 1981, Australia's regional population grew more than capital cities in 2020-21 but, even with mining on the up, Kalgoorlie-Boulder bucked the trend.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder has been promoted for years as Australia's biggest outback city — famous for its red dirt and the discovery of gold in 1893.But if new figures are to be believed, it might not hold the title for much longer.

The figures have sparked debate about their accuracy as some have suggested they do not reflect Western Australia's current mining boom, and they even surprised Premier Mark McGowan."A lot of regional WA is actually booming," Mr McGowan said in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Thursday. He said hotel accommodation in the city was almost fully booked and vacancy rates for rental properties were at record lows."They are just estimates and guesses. They don't do exact counting and I would say the curve of their numbers is three to four years behind the reality," Mr Bowler said.

Australia's biggest outback city, Kalgoorlie-Boulder in WA, bucked the trend with its eighth straight year of population decline At least one thing is certain, newcomers to Kalgoorlie-Boulder are finding it hard to find a place to live."We have never had more houses and more accommodation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, so you don't need to be a Rhodes scholar to work out that accommodation is tight, it's all been taken, therefore the population has never been higher.""The vacancy rate is less than 1 per cent … the rental market is absolutely booming," she told the ABC last month.

The local council owns the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport and is in a catch-22 situation of reaping the rewards of additional revenue for every passenger that lands, but it also translates into fewer ratepayers.
