The Real Estate Institute of Queensland says a focus on greater rights for tenants is diminishing the authority of property owners and overriding contractual freedoms.
The reforms would prevent landlords from accepting rent bids or raising rents on properties more than once every 12 months. The bill will be scrutinised by a government housing committee before being debated in parliament.
The proposed reforms would only allow landlords to raise rents on their properties every 12 months and prevent them from accepting rental bids higher than the listed price. One of those reforms prevented landlords from soliciting rent bidding, but did not prevent them from accepting rent bids offered by applicants.
"I have neighbours next door to me, and just in the last six weeks or so the share house was paying $780," Ms Carr said."It had a little bit of paint work done on the fence, and I saw it advertised for $925 and four more young people have just moved into it." She welcomed the proposal to stop landlords accepting rent bids since landlords could "subtly" imply to tenants that they were open to rent bidding.Ms Mercorella said tenants should be free to offer higher rents to secure their property of choice.
