A new study suggests limits on red and processed meat consumption aren't necessary for long-term health. Cancer and other health organizations strongly disgree
Share to twitterShould Americans limit their intake of red and processed meat to protect their health, as current recommendations suggest, or eat as they normally would? From hot dogs to high-end charcuterie, red and processed meat may not be the long-term health hazard it was once thought to be, according to a panel of independent experts who suggest that most adults continue to eat it as they normally do.
The new message amounts to what they call a “weak” recommendation, but a growing number of cancer and nutrition watchdog organizations are pushing back, urging consumers to continue limiting their intake of red and processed meat to reduce their risk of developing chronic, life-threatening illnesses.
Before you have a cow, consider: There’s good news and bad news. As with many things in science, there’s formidable gray area — and plenty of controversy. A more lax approach is likely to be what omnivores want to hear. The study on preferences found that people who eat red and processed meat enjoy it, perceive it as healthy and are not keen on changing their habits or trying a meat substitute, the authors wrote. But women were more likely than men to be concerned about health consequences.
The traditional notion of guidelines may be outdated, he suggested. “We shouldn’t be telling people what to do. We’re in the age of patient-centered care and shared decision- making.”
