President Joe Biden has slammed a Russian court for its 'unacceptable' decision to send Women's National Basketball Association star Brittney Griner to prison for nine years on drug smuggling charges and demanded for her immediate release.
Griner, 31, has been detained since February 17, a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, and charged with drug smuggling for bringing illegal cannabis-infused vape cartridges into Moscow.
President Biden immediately reacted to the decision labelling it as"unacceptable" and called for her release. President Biden also said his administration would work “tirelessly and pursue every possible avenue” to bring the basketball star and American Paul Whelan, who is also jailed in Russia on an espionage conviction, home “as soon as possible”.
