Foreign Minister Penny Wong has provided an update Australians in Gaza, declaring the government will continue to push for those who are still stranded to get safely out of the war-torn area.
The crossing point, between Gaza and Egypt, had been closed off since the Israel-Hamas conflict began on October 7.
Speaking at a media conference in Adelaide on Thursday afternoon, Australia's Foreign Minister said she was"relieved" that 20 Aussies were able to safely leave Gaza overnight. "There are still Australians in Gaza, Australians, permanent residents and their families, I know how distressing the situation is for them and for their next of kin. "We want humanitarian supplies of food, water, medicine, fuel to reach people in desperate need. The people of Gaza cannot wait," she said.
Ms Wong emphasised the international community will"not accept ongoing civilian deaths" in Gaza as"even in war, there are rules". "Just to give you some sense of the dimensions of this challenge, there are thousands of foreign nationals in Gaza. Thousands," she told reporters.
