Sydney president Andrew Pridham has cast doubt on the economics of a standalone team in Tasmania saying relocation of an existing one must remain as an option as the August decision draws near.

North Melbourne, who play four games a season in Hobart, are the club most often linked with relocating, but they have also continually ruled out agreeing to such a move. The Kangaroos are also debt free and receive less AFL funding than other clubs, particularly Gold Coast and the Giants who joined the competition this century.

The Tasmanian Government pays for Hawthorn and the Kangaroos to play home games in Launceston and Hobart. The AFL committed to a vote from presidents in August, however, the retirement of Tasmanian premier Peter Gutwein, uncertainty about the real cost of a new stadium in Hobart and the AFL’s unwillingness to guarantee more than $8 million per year in funding,to the team over 10 years, has stifled the bid’s momentum.
