Almost 20 years after their arrest, the five remaining members of the Bali Nine, who have been serving life sentences in Indonesia, will return to Australia following successful negotiations by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The five remaining members of the Bali Nine serving life sentences in Indonesia will return home after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese successfully negotiated their release, almost 20 years after they were arrested for drug trafficking. Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush and Martin Stephens, were sentenced to life imprisonment after being arrested in April 2005 for attempting to smuggle large quantities of heroin out of Indonesia.
Co-ordinating minister for legal affairs, human rights, immigration and corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra revealed to the outlet that a transfer could be made under the framework of mutual legal assistance. “In Peru, the Australian Prime Minister made the request for the transfer of Australian prisoners with President Prabowo,” Mr Mahendra told the outlet on Friday.
