The Herald's View: The passing of Olivia Newton-John, Archie Roach and Judith Durham in recent weeks has given us time to reflect on their contribution to the notion of Australianness
, show a young girl with a sweet voice and smile that the camera loved.
But, like many Australians, who excelled in the arts during the ’60s, the road to further recognition led to Britain. Newton-John’s journey to London came via Sydney, where she won a TV talent show whose top prize was a boat trip to Britain, which she took in 1966 with her mother.’Til You Say You’ll Be Mine
, which garnered, at best, modest attention. Not put off, she toured Europe with expat Australian singer Pat Carroll, which became a stepping stone to securing some support slots and TV appearances.in 1973, which led to a Grammy win for best female country vocal performance for the title track. The following year, she won a Grammy for record of the year withand, in the same year, was the British entrant to the Eurovision Song Contest, coming fourth singing.
For all of her fame though, what she became best known for was her approachable and good-natured persona. She wore her celebrity status lightly. She used her success to champion her chosen causes, including animal welfare, the environment and a more wholistic treatment of cancer.
They did it with much grace and poise. We thank them and remember them for the remarkable people they were.
