This week's trip down Vicarage Road memory lane recalls a historic victory on the opening day of the 1982/83 league season watfordfc
The Vicarage Road end was able to celebrate a famous victory at the start of the 1982/83 league season
There are many memorable dates in Watford’s history but not too many are more significant than August 28, 1982. That sunny Saturday saw an official attendance of 19,630 pack into Vicarage Road to watch Graham Taylor’s history makers play the club’s first ever game in the top tier of English football. Everton were the visitors to Hertfordshire but they were to return to Merseyside a beaten side, goals from Gerry Armstrong and Pat Rice securing a famous 2-0 victory for the Hornets. The pictures of those goals appear to have been sadly lost from our archive during the intervening 40 years, but we are delighted to be able to share some other photos from that day when Watford made a winning start to life in the First Division.
