Annie sent a reminder that dressing up as someone who is disabled is not only offensive, it's damaging. She reiterated this message in hashtags she's used for past Halloweens.
"Disability is not something we can just take on and off, attempting to use it as a prop is a mockery of the privilege one has in order to do such a thing," Annie toldin an email. She detailed incidents in which she saw a party full of people dressed as elderly disabled people using walkers and canes, but it was in a venue that wasn't accessible to her, and another time when her friend was denied entry to a party after they thought her cane was a prop.
