The NT government has outlined its road map for Territorians to 'learn to live with alcohol', meaning long-standing bans could soon be overturned.

The NT government has released a tender to consult with almost 70 remote Aboriginal communities about their aspirations for managing alcohol.

A spokesperson said more than 100 communities and homelands had registered interest in developing a community alcohol plan, while 31 already had plans in development. Alcohol Policy Minister Brent Potter said the current restrictions in place, including some communities with bans stretching back to the 1970s, cannot stay in place forever."Because if we don't do that, we're going to continue to have these prohibition issues and people coming into town to access takeaway alcohol."

"Because some of these lot, they used to drink VB but now they're drinking mid-strengths."But some leaders fear Aboriginal communities are not properly equipped to handle the return of alcohol. "The migration is around living conditions, the better green spaces, the overcrowding of houses," he said.
