"A lot of money is tied up in BasicsCards, so it means that that income-management system has totally failed people here with regards to being able to purchase food.She said the outage was also preventing people from getting help in emergency situations. Ms Scholes said community members had banded together to support each other, with the local council putting on community cook-ups at lunch and dinner times.

"It's extremely frustrating, because this occurrence happens almost on an annual basis, around Christmas, when the Telstra line goes down, for whatever reason."
