Former prime minister John Howard has joined a number of prominent Australians in signing an open letter calling for China to release detained journalist Cheng Lei.
The 47-year-old former high-profile anchor for the Chinese government's English-language broadcaster CGTN is accused of supplying state secrets overseas.
