A road safety advocate has called for a movable barrier system to be installed on the Sydney Harbour Bridge after a high-speed crash claimed the lives of two men.

The incidents have previously led to calls for safety barriers to be installed to separate the northbound and southbound lanes to avoid serious collisions. "I've driven across it many times and I move across from the lane because of fear. You just have to make a minor mistake and you’re in a situation where you could be killed."The technology, also called road zipper systems, uses a specialised vehicle to lift heavy linked barriers and gently move them from one lane to another.

The department insisted it had considered using a zipper machine after a serious crash in 2015, but found one lane on the iconic landmark would have to be removed, which would lead to a 15 per cent reduction of traffic capacity.
