Bidjigal artist and La Perouse elder Esme Timbery, whose career spanned more than 80 years, was known for her intricate designs made from shells gathered from beaches around New South Wales.

Timbery was regarded as one of Australia's longest-practising First Nations artists, with a career spanning more than 80 years. "I hope that having my name displayed publicly on this building will inspire our young people to follow their dreams at university, particularly in the arts, for years to come," she told the university at the time."Esme Timbery shared the magic of shellwork with all of us and UNSW was delighted she allowed us to name a building in her honour," the spokesperson said.Her great-grandmother, Queen Emma Timbery, exhibited shell works in London in 1910.

A documentary about her life and work, called She Sells Seashells, was produced by the ABC in 2007, boosting her profile further.Indigenous artist Blak Douglas painted Timbery for the Archibald Prize in 2009, in a piece titled White Shells, Black Heart. He said he used shells Timbery had gifted him in the background of his portrait as a tribute to her work.
