Event hosted by Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans aimed at enacting tenants' rights law
When Failsal Alawad managed to escape Syria and resettle in San Diego, he expected a far more stable life for himself and his family.
“She purposely did the increase to place pressure on my family and force us to self-evict,” said Alawad, one of the invited speakers at a Saturday rally to promote tenants’ rights in San Diego. “This is a common dilemma most families and newcomers are struggling with.”The Syrian refugee shared his experience with hundreds of people at Colina Del Sol Park in City Heights, where thousands of immigrants from nations around the world have resettled in recent years.
“We want to make sure families and children are able to stay housed,” said Becca Ayala, an organizer with the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans. Ultimately, they would like a rent-control ordinance to govern how much landlords could raise their monthly rates.
