A new report boosts the case for a Medicare overhaul under which pharmacists and nurses will take on tasks traditionally the domain of doctors.

A Productivity Commission report has bolstered the case for overhauling Medicare to allow allied health professionals such as pharmacists, physiotherapists and nurses to take on tasks traditionally done by doctors.premiers will plead for an increase in hospital fundingMr Albanese will provide premiers with the findings of the government’s Strengthening Medicare Taskforce, which is expected to recommend expanding rebates to other health professionals.

“Quite clearly, we need to have a better way of engaging primary healthcare that the Commonwealth has responsibility for,” Mr Albanese said from Perth, where he was promoting Labor’s policy to establish urgent care clinics as an alternative to hospital emergency departments.“With the hospital sector, that’s a responsibility primarily of the states, but we can work better together.”

The Productivity Commission’s report, released on Thursday, examines each state’s health system and warns public hospital performance has gone backwards in several key benchmarks. “Factors contributing to GP‑type presentations at emergency departments include perceived or actual lack of access to GP services, the proximity of emergency departments and trust in emergency department staff,” the report said.Waiting times to be seen in emergency wards have also blown out. Just 65 per cent of people seeking treatment for Triage Category 2 conditions, such as serious chest pains or severe fractures, were seen within the clinically recommended time of 10 minutes.
