A new candidate has emerged in the Cardinals’ search for a head coach in Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
A new candidate has emerged in the Cardinals’ search for a head coach as Jonathan Gannon, the defensive coordinator for the Eagles, is expected to interview with the team on Monday − a day after he coaches Philadelphia in Super Bowl 57 at State Farm Stadium.Gannon, 40, is wrapping up his second season as the Eagles’ DC and was a finalist for the Texans’ head coaching position before Houston hired Lovie Smith and DeMeco Ryans.
Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo had second interviews with Cardinals Owner Michael Bidwill and General Manager Monti Ossenfort this past week via Zoom and Arizona is expected to name its next head coach within the next few days. At the beginning of Super Bowl week, Bidwill chose not to address the head coach search. He then made some comments about it Friday, saying he understood fans' frustration about not having a head coach yet but that the Cardinals sought to take their time to make the right decision.
The team let go of Kliff Kingsbury on Jan. 9, and more than a month later, Kafka and Anarumo were left as finalists until Sunday, hours before Super Bowl 57 kicks off, when the report of Gannon being in the mix surfaced. Under Gannon, the Eagles had the second best defense in the NFL in terms of yards per game allowed, and led the league in sacks with 70 and fewest passing yards allowed per game.
