, MSU's athletic department is"heavily interested" in at least four current college coaches for its vacancy — Kansas' Lance Leipold, Oregon State's Jonathan Smith, Wake Forest's Dave Clawson and Washington State's Jake Dickert. The reportsuggest that these are the only candidates Michigan State is considering, but Spartans Illustrated does believe each of these four are near the top of MSU's list of options.
Smith has done more with less in Corvallis, competing against programs like Oregon, Washington and USC. At 44, Smith has built a program from scratch into being a contender in their respective conference. He is an offensive coach, who once played quarterback at Oregon State. The 44-year-old's entire coaching career has been on the West Coast, so moving to the Midwest would put him in an unfamiliar landscape.
Still, Dickert has experience taking over a program in less-than-ideal circumstances. Hired as WSU's defensive coordinator in 2020, Dickert took over the program on an interim basis in 2021 after then-head coach Nick Rolovich was fired for refusing to comply with the state's COVID-19 vaccination policy. Dickert led the Cougars to a 3-3 finish that season and was named the permanent head coach after a 40-13 win over rival Washington.
