Law enforcement officials across Hudson County acknowledged an uptick in cases, but also attributed the increase to new guidelines in reporting bias incidents.

It’s not only in Hudson County, however. There were 1,871 bias incident reports across the state, a 29 percent increase from the 1,447 bias incidents reported for 2020. Law enforcement officials across Hudson County acknowledged an uptick in cases, but also attributed the increase to new guidelines in reporting bias incidents and an increased awareness of hate crimes nationwide.
Statistics on the motivations, not the race, creed or gender of the 2021 Hudson County victims were available, but statewide 39% of the incidents were categorized as anti-Black, 15% anti-Jewish, 12% anti-LGBTQ+, 4.6% anti-Hispanic or Latino and 2% anti-Muslim. The new guidelines included expanding the definition of “bias incidents” to include a wider range of victims. Prior guidelines only covered crimes based on race, color, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity. The revised guidelines added other “protected classes” including disability, gender, gender identity or expression and national origin.
