Lakers get intriguing road games on opening day and Christmas.
With the full NBA schedule slated to come out in the coming week, some of the key dates of the Lakers’ regular season are beginning to emerge.
The Lakers are expected to open the season at Golden State on Oct. 18, when the Warriors will receive their championship rings at Chase Center on TNT, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. On Christmas on ESPN, the Lakers are expected to face the Dallas Mavericks and perennial All-NBA candidate Luka Doncic on the road, according to Marc Stein.
The Lakers went 1-3 against the Warriors and 1-2 against Dallas last season, and will be looking to better assert themselves against the two teams that reached the Western Conference Finals earlier this year. The opener in San Francisco – when some of LeBron James’ greatest rivals in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green receive their fourth career rings – is sure to provide off-court fodder.
Even though the Lakers slumped toward the end of the season, their games against Golden State and Dallas were some of their most compelling, including a 56-point performance by James against the Warriors in February and a triple-overtime win against the Mavericks won by Austin Reaves last December. It’s the second straight time the Lakers open the season against Golden State, and the second time in three seasons they’ll play the Mavericks on Christmas. The Lakers haven’t played either opening and Christmas – two tentpole NBA broadcasting nights – away from their home arena since 2018.
