Mayra Flores' success is a hard-fought victory for Republicans, who have been fiercely targeting South Texas since making inroads there in 2020.Republican Mayra Flores won a special election Tuesday night to represent a Rio Grande Valley congressional district, flipping the longtime Democratic stronghold and soon making her the first congresswoman born in Mexico.
Flores narrowly avoided a runoff, earning 51 percent of the vote in a four-way contest. Democrat Dan Sanchez, an attorney, came in second at 43.3 percent. Flores had massively outraised him, reporting $1.1 million in total receipts to Sanchez’s $146,000. Tuesday’s win will give Flores just a few months in Congress as she completes the remainder of U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela’s term. Vela, a Brownsville Democrat, stepped down from the seat in March to take a job at a lobbying firm, prompting the special election. The state will use its new redistricting map in the general election, reshaping the 34th to more heavily favor Democrats. Under those lines, President Joe Biden won in 2020 by 15.5 percentage points.
