The House will convene at noon and may hold a floor vote on the new Republican nominee for speaker, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La.Tuesday night. He is the party's fourth nominee for the job since Kevin McCarthy was ousted as speaker three weeks ago.
On Tuesday morning, Republicans selected Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., as their nominee for speaker only to see him drop out that afternoon, unable to get the 217 votes needed to win the speaker's gavel in the full House. There are just 221 Republicans in the House, leaving very little wiggle room for a nominee to win the top job.In a Truth Social post, former President Donald Trump this morning said it was his “strong SUGGESTION” to make Johnson the speaker.
"I am not going to make an Endorsement in this race," Trump wrote,"because I COULD NEVER GO AGAINST ANY OF THESE FINE AND VERY TALENTED MEN, all of whom have supported me. ...
Johnson, the GOP Conference vice chair, could suffer a fate similar to Emmer’s. It remains unclear whether he can garner the 217 Republican votes — a simple majority of the full House — needed to win the coveted gavel.
