Australian Border Force officers have greeted three sailors who had to be rescued from a sinking catamaran in the Coral Sea.

Water police brought Russians Evgeny Kovalevsky and Stanislav Beryozkin, as well as Frenchman Vincent Thomas Garate ashore after they climbed down a long ladder from vehicle carrier Dugong Ace on Thursday morning. Australian Border Force officers boarded the boat when it arrived in Mooloolaba Harbour to verify the men's documents.

Three sailors rescued after shark attackThree sailors have been rescued after their inflatable boat was attacked by sharks off Queensland's coast. They were attempting to sail from Vanuatu to Cairns on the nine-metre vessel when several sharks attacked the boat, damaging both hulls. It left the trio stranded more than 800 kilometres southeast of Cairns. A radio distress signal was sent out at 1:30am Wednesday, which was answered by a nearby ship off the coast of Rockhampton. The ship diverted course and rescued the sailors, who are expected to dock back in Brisbane on Thursday.
