Researchers from QIMR Berghofer and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre have discovered a way to ensure a promising new blood cancer treatment stays on target.

Researchers have discovered a way to better guide immunotherapy to fight different types of blood cancers, turning a shot in the dark into a precision guided missile.

Senior researcher, QIMR cancer immunologist Dr Kyohei Nakamura, said they discovered a specific type of cell, known as iNKT cells, were having a direct effect on how the immunotherapy performed. “iNKT cells are usually rare in the body, and they are even more rare in cancer patients,” Nakamura said. Haematologist and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Cellular Immunotherapy at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Professor Simon Harrison, said the research was very promising.
