A researcher who studies human decomposition has analysed samples of Putricia the corpse flower during its bloom in January for its scent compounds.

Researcher Bridget Thurn wanted to find out if Putricia's compounds were similar to human decomposition.As soon as she heard Putricia was about to bloom, she said she was "so excited" to meld her love of nature with her expertise. The researcher took a sorbent tube — a stainless steel container used to collect gases and vapours — and connected it to a vacuum pump."Then I drew the air or the smell through the tube, and the compounds get stuck to the sorbent material."
"I got a lot of sulphur, it smells a lot like laundry that you've left in your washing machine for too long, mildewy," she said.
