BREAKING: Residents in the Gippsland towns of Goongerah and Martins Creek have been told to evacuate as an out of control fire continues to burn

The fire burning towards the west of Goongerah is travelling east towards the two towns and Emergency Management Victoria is recommending residents "evacuate now" or move to a safer location.

"This may be the last opportunity for people to leave before fire activity increases," said the warning.The fire may impact the towns at any time over the next 48 hours. Police conducted door knocks on Thursday and Friday advising residents that the evacuation warning was likely with a top temperature of 34 forecast for Goongerah on Saturday.The warning comes after the CFA declared a total fire ban across Victoria for Monday, with temperatures tipped to reach 44 degrees in some parts of the state.
