Dr. Shoo Lee, a retired Canadian neonatologist, claims that a review of medical evidence in the Lucy Letby case suggests the babies may not have been murdered, challenging the convictions of the British nurse who is serving multiple life sentences for the deaths of seven infants.
Retired Canadian neonatologist Dr. Shoo Lee has cast doubt on the convictions of British nurse Lucy Letby , who was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six more at a hospital in England in 2015 and 2016. Letby, 35, is currently serving 15 life sentences with no chance of parole. Dr. Lee stated that a group of 14 doctors reviewed the medical evidence from Letby's trial and concluded that the infants either died of natural causes or due to inadequate medical care.
He asserted that there was no evidence to support the prosecution's argument that Letby injected air into the babies' bloodstream, causing embolisms, which was a key factor in her conviction. Dr. Lee highlighted that embolisms are rare occurrences and the skin discoloration described at trial was not consistent with this diagnosis. Letby's legal team has been attempting to challenge her convictions since last year, launching two bids that were quashed. Following Dr. Lee's press conference, they filed a fresh appeal with the UK's Criminal Cases Review Commission. Dr. Lee's claims have sparked controversy, with the judge presiding over an inquiry into the hospital where Letby worked stating that those doubting her guilt are causing the victims' families 'enormous additional distress'. However, Letby's defence lawyer, Mark McDonald, maintains that there is now 'overwhelming evidence' that Letby was wrongly convicted.During Letby's trial, the prosecution argued that she left little trace when she killed babies and suggested she sometimes injected air into their bloodstreams or stomachs, leading to embolisms. Dr. Dewi Evans, the prosecution's leading expert, diagnosed the babies with air embolism in the absence of finding another cause of death, but Dr. Lee disputed this, stating that an embolism is very rare and the described skin discoloration was not consistent with the diagnosis. Letby has always maintained her innocence throughout the trial and subsequent appeals. The case continues to generate significant public interest and debate
