Kareem McKenzie, 44, of Willingboro, played in the NFL for over 10 years as an offensive tackle before heading back to school to earn his Ph. D. in counseling and supervision.The moment former NFL Offensive Tackle Kareem McKenzie, 44, of Willingboro, walked across the stage to receive his Ph.D. at Kean University’s Graduate Commencement ceremony on May 16, was bittersweet.
“So, my birthday is sandwiched between two very significant events in my life,” McKenzie said. “… . The celebratory nature of my birthday has really changed over the past three years, so I see it as an opportunity for me to reflect, process and be still for a little bit.” Originally wanting to be lawyer, McKenzie said growing up in a single parent household, he knew that his mother couldn’t afford to send him to college. “I had to figure out a way to get there myself and football was the most viable outlet at that time,” McKenzie said.
Retiring from NFL in 2012, McKenzie said he began looking at statistics for retired professional athletes. “Mainly football players in the statistics the prospects of surviving financially or relationship-wise and just overall weren’t that great retired football players,” he recalls. Once the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, McKenzie said he knew the program wouldn’t be as effective virtually compared to in-person, so he made the hard decision to stop working at the nonprofit.
